Dr. Oladejo Olaleye, an alumnus of the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan (CoMUI), Nigeria performs the first transoral robotic surgery in Leicester.

This groundbreaking achievement marked a historic milestone in the field of medicine as he led the Head and Neck Robotic Surgery Programme at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust in the United Kingdom in the first-ever transoral robotic surgery in Leicester.

Dr. Olaleye’s academic journey began in Nigeria where his excellence shone at the Federal Government College Ogbomosho. He then studied at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan (CoMUI), where he graduated MBBS in 2002. After completing his Housemanship at the University College Hospital Ibadan, Dr. Olaleye embarked on a remarkable trajectory of growth and learning. His dedication and commitment earned him the Best Corper award during his National Youth Service in Ebonyi State in 2004. 

During his specialty training at the University of Birmingham in the UK, Dr. Olaleye worked on human papillomavirus epidemiology and epigenetics in Oropharyngeal cancers, earning a PhD in 2018. His quest for excellence led him to two advanced Head and Neck Surgery Fellowships at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital in the UK and the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia.

Robotic surgery, known for its minimally invasive nature, high-definition visualization, and improved completeness of resections, promises to revolutionize the treatment of head and neck cancers. Dr. Olaleye’s pioneering efforts ensure that patients will benefit from enhanced survival rates and a reduction in the toxicity of chemoradiation.

Dr. Peter Nwosu is the 11th President of the State University of New York (SUNY) at Oswego, founded in 1861. Dr. Nwosu made history as the first Black President of SUNY.

His recent inauguration was a celebrated event, attended by prominent figures from academia, local government, and the Nigerian community, as well as students and staff of the university.

Dr. Nwosu, who brings over 30 years of experience in higher education, was warmly welcomed to his new role during a ceremony that emphasized his vision for fostering innovation, diversity, and academic excellence at SUNY Oswego. His presidency marks a significant milestone for both the institution and the broader African diaspora, as he aims to lead the university towards new heights of global engagement and inclusivity.

His leadership reflects a deep commitment to student success, diversity in education, and advancing the mission of public universities. The inauguration event celebrated not only his personal accomplishments but also the symbolic importance of his role in inspiring future generations of leaders from underrepresented backgrounds.

Eni Aluko, a former sports director for Aston Villa and Angel City turned sports broadcaster, has become the first black female football club owner in Italy.

Mercury 13 latest stake acquisition of Como’s Women makes Aluko the first black woman to own a football club in Italy.

Aluko whom after retirement, focused on sports broadcasting, says joining Mercury 13 has turned her dream of owing a club into reality. This not only allows her to make decisions but also inspires more black investors into the sports ownership world.

Eniola Aluko, the Nigerian-British football executive, football broadcaster and former professional player, played as a winger and striker in football clubs such as Juventus, Chelsea and Birmingham.

Prince Harry and Meghan visited Nigeria for the first time, on May 10 2024. The royals were invited by the Nigeria’s Chief of Defense Staff. 

Prince Harry and Meghan were in Nigeria to champion the Invictus Games, which Harry founded to aid the rehabilitation of wounded and sick service members and veterans.

Upon their arrival, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex paid a warm visit to the children at the Lights Academy in Abuja, Nigeria. Harry and Meghan also enjoyed the kindergarten session at Lightway Academy Abuja, Nigeria. “Jump up, turn around” for Harry and Meghan with the youngest children at Lightway Academy. They also visited the military hospital in Kaduna, Nigeria.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also visited Lagos, Nigeria on the third day of their visit to the country. As they left Lightway Academy Meghan was gifted a box with a traditional mask and a series of books about Nigerian heritage.

On their visit, Prince Harry was given the renowned ‘Agbada/Babaringa’ and hula cap as a going away gift from Senator Uba Sani, governor of Kaduna state in Nigeria.

The Duke and Duchess enjoyed a morning outing to watch sitting volleyball at the Defence Headquarters Officers Mess in Abuja, Nigeria. Meghan enjoyed the performance of Team Harry at the sitting volleyball game at Defence Headquarters Officer’s Mess in Abuja. The couple were given Nigeria team scarves to wear. 

After the sitting volleyball game, Meghan was engulfed in a welcome embrace by a group of women supporters.

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, named ‘Ifeoma’, embraces Nigerian root. She said, “It’s been eye-opening to be able to know more about my heritage.”

According to Associated Press, Meghan on her second day in Nigeria, where she is visiting for the first time with Prince Harry to promote mental health for wounded soldiers and young girls, acknowledged Nigeria as “my country”.

Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, has said it’s been “humbling” to find out through a genealogy test that she is partly Nigerian as she met with women in the West African nation Saturday, including with Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General of the World Trade Organization.

“Every single moment that I hear anyone talk about what it means to be a Nigerian woman, it is the most flattering thing to be in that company.” 

– Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, spoke about her heritage during their Nigeria trip.
